Automaker doubles down on hybrid production with full control of hybrid transmission tech used in new Fiat Grande Panda Hybrid.

Stellantis boosts its capabilities in hybrid car production by taking complete control of its joint venture with Belgian transmission and propulsion system specialist Punch Powertrain.

The JV has plants in Metz, France, and at the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy, where it produces eDCT transmissions, a hybrid technology that integrates a 21-kW (28-hp) electric motor into a dual-clutch transmission.

This motor provides electric drive when less torque is needed, such as when driving in city environments or at constant speeds, allowing the internal-combustion engine to remain switched off for up to 50% of the time.

Thanks to the system’s lightweight and compact dimensions, fuel savings and reductions in tailpipe emissions are claimed.

In a company statement, Stellantis says it decided to directly manage the development and production process of the eDCT transmission with a view to expand and renew its mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid model range in response to increasing consumer demand.
