Powertrain specialist Horse begins production of its latest electric motor at its Portuguese plant, targeting next-generation gas-hybrid powertrains in response to increasing European consumer demand for the technology.
The company, owned by equal partners Renault and Geely, says the radial flux eMotor is initially designed for use in hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems employing its HR12, HR16 and HR18 internal-combustion engines.
The electric motor develops 66 hp and 156 lb.-ft. (212 Nm) of torque and can directly drive a vehicle's wheels at up to 81 mph (130 km/h) in electric mode. When the vehicle is decelerating, the eMotor acts as a generator, recovering kinetic energy that is stored in the vehicle’s battery.
Horse says four new production lines added at the Aveiro plant allow construction of up to 160,000 units a year. Each line has a dedicated function for various stages of production including machining of the motor housing, rotor shaft and magnet, along with final assembly.
Patrice Haettel, chief executive officer at Horse, says, “With its compact design and the ability to work in 100% electric mode, this powerful and efficient motor is perfect for many types of hybrid vehicles.”
