Marelli signs a multiyear lease to relocate its North American headquarters in a 200,000-sq.-ft. (18,580-sq.-m) building in Southfield, MI, formerly occupied by fellow Tier 1 automotive supplier Federal-Mogul.
Marelli currently has two locations in Auburn Hills and Farmington Hills, MI. The company plans to start moving into the midcentury modern building, which has been vacant since 2015, late this year, with full occupancy expected by March 2021.
The 3-story building, which is undergoing extensive renovations, will feature workspaces for nearly 500 employees, 75 conference rooms, an auditorium, cafeteria, fitness room, and both indoor and outdoor meeting space.
About 100,000 sq.-ft. (9,290 sq.-m) will be dedicated to testing and lab equipment to support R&D activities for the supplier’s automotive lighting, electronics, exhaust, interiors, powertrain, ride-dynamics and thermal-solutions business units.
“While it’s important for us to be in close proximity to our automotive clients, it’s just as important to ease the transition for our employees,” Gene Spektor, Marelli senior vice president-sales and business development North America, says in a news release. “Our new location will have minimal impact on the average commute, and will provide employees with a modern, open and collaborative work environment.”
Marelli was known as Magneti Marelli before it was spun off from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and merged with Japanese parts maker Calsonic Kansei in 2019. The headquarters relocation is a key step in the integration of the two companies.
Marelli employs 62,000 people worldwide and has 170 facilities and R&D centers across Asia, the Americas, Europe and Africa. Revenues totaled €14.6 billion ($16.7 billion) in 2018.
