Bentley's latest Flying Spur claims title as most powerful 4-door sedan.

Bentley launches the most powerful road-going 4-door sedan in its history in the shape of the fourth-generation Flying Spur, the first model to use the automaker’s new Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain.

The powertrain, first seen earlier this year, has even been tuned up beyond the test mule and now boasts a maximum power output of 771 hp and a claimed maximum torque delivery of 737 lb.-ft. (999 Nm) from the cross-plane 4.0L gasoline V-8 coupled with an electric motor integrated inside an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

That embarrassment of riches in terms of performance allows the luxury sedan to claim a 0-to-60 mph (97 km/h) sprint time of just 3.3 seconds while restricting CO2 emissions to 33 g/km and a 47-mile (76-km) zero-tailpipe-emission electric range with up to 515 miles (829 km) between fuel stops.

The gas engine uses no traditional vacuum system and 350-bar fuel injection pressure, up from 200 bar, and claims cleaner combustion along with improved emissions. With the e-motor negating turbo lag, twin single-scroll turbochargers are used, reducing complexity and allowing them to run hotter, again reducing emissions. No cylinder deactivation hardware is needed because the engine can be switched off entirely when using the electric motor.

Full electric mode can be deployed at speeds of up to 87 mph (140 kph), with throttle applications of up to 75%. The battery can be fully recharged in 2¾ hours thanks to improvements in charger and battery capacity, with 11 kW peak charging power.

The hybrid system manages the energy flows depending upon modes chosen: pure EV, electric boost, regenerative braking and a charge mode, where the engine drives the wheels and charges the battery at the same time.

Visually, the exterior remains very similar to its predecessor launched in 2019 because the main changes are under the skin, including a new electrical architecture to provide a comprehensive suite of convenience and comfort technologies.

Market availability is expected in 2025 and prices are thought to start at about $280,000.
