Maserati Reveals Drop-Top GranCabrio Sports Tourer
Italian luxury brand opts for traditional ragtop to save weight and space.
Maserati unveils its open-top GranCabrio version of the award-winning GranTurismo sports coupé at its iconic Modena headquarters in Italy.
The automaker has shunned hardtop convertible contraptions, preferring a simple, traditional retractable fabric roof to save on both weight and truck space. It claims to fold away in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h). It also claims to accommodate four passengers.
Special open-top additional features include a standard seat-mounted neck warmer, supplying heat to the driver and passenger’s necks at three different levels of intensity. There’s also an optional wind stopper, which reduces the formation of turbulence inside the passenger compartment.
The Maserati GranCabrio launches with the Trofeo trim level, featuring the GranTurismo’s 6-cyl. gasoline Nettuno engine, a 3.0L twin-turbo with a maximum 550 hp and 487 lb.-ft. (660 Nm) of torque. While no performance figures are yet claimed, it probably won’t be far behind the hardtop’s 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time of 3.5 seconds and top speed of 198 mph (319 km/h).
