Toyota Chairman's Hot Hatch Makes It to Market in Japan
Lexus LBX Morizo RR claims most powerful 3-cyl. ICE powertrain on the market.
Lexus finally brings its most powerful 3-cyl. internal-combustion-engine-powered hot hatchback to market in the shape of the Lexus LBX Morizo RR.
The car, first seen as a concept in January at the Tokyo Auto Salon, is expected to reach Japanese consumers in late August. Its marketing plan includes a lottery of 100 vehicles of “bespoke build” versions with tickets available through Lexus dealerships.
This program allows customers to choose from a wide range of variations. Special custom options include dedicated brake calipers in Morizo's signature yellow among a host of other special options.
The car is named after Toyota chairman and renowned racing driver Akio Toyoda, whose nickname was Morizo and who helped develop the car. Its 1.6L intercooler turbocharged inline 3-cyl. delivers maximum power output of 305 hp at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft. (400 Nm) of torque from between 3,250 rpm and 4,600 rpm.
With a claimed curb weight from 1,440 kg (3,168 lbs.) the LBX Morizo RR claims the 0-to-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 5.2 seconds.
The specially refined chassis also claims a world-first with Response-Enhancing Damping Structure (REDS) used on the front lower suspension arms to cope with changing road surface conditions.
Transmission is through the automaker’s Direct Shift 8-speed automatic gearbox of a 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission). There’s also electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive.
The car features sports-style front and rear bumpers, 19-in. forged wheels, colored arch moldings and colored rocker moldings to complete its lowered center of gravity. Inside are dedicated sports seats, aluminum pedals and interior accents.
So far, no plans have been announced for the car to be sold in other global markets.
