Two new 'sporty' models join VW's BEV range.

Volkswagen unveils two new battery-electric vehicles both boasting a sporty character with high-performance electric powertrains and sports design flourishes.

The ID.3 GTX hatchback and ID.7 GTX Tourer station wagon join the GTX ID. product range launched in 2021 that has proved a success with European car buyers with every fifth newly registered ID.4 and ID.5 being a GTX.

The ID.3 GTX will launch with rear-wheel drive in two variants. The top-of-the-line model is the ID.3 GTX Performance; however, no performance figures have been published by the automaker. In line with most modular-designed BEV powertrains, it’s likely to perform similarly to the existing ID.4 Pro Performance claiming maximum power of 204 hp, a torque output of 229 lb.-ft. (310 Nm) and a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time of 8.5 seconds.

Volkswagen does say that the ID.7 GTX Tourer will be the most powerful model in the product line. Like the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, it has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that can drive the front axle in parallel with the rear axle. This means its potential performance would be more than 295 hp, a 0-62 mph sprint time of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

Kai Grünitz, member of the Volkswagen board responsible for development, says: “The ID.7 GTX Tourer paves the way for a new type of sporty mobility by combining the spaciousness of a large (station wagon) with the performance of a sports car. What is fascinating here is the instantaneous punch with which the electric motors provide their maximum output and torque in fractions of a second.”
