Mazda’s new plant in Mexico, currently under construction, will build a yet-to-be-named Toyota-branded vehicle for sale mainly in North America.
The Toyota subcompact, to be based on the Mazda2 B-car, is scheduled to start production in the summer of 2015. Annual volume will be 50,000 units, the auto makers say.
The plant, located in the state of Guanajuato, will launch production in 2014, with Toyota chipping in to pay for production equipment and cover development costs for the new model.
The factory, which will build the Mazda2 and Mazda3, will have annual production capacity of 140,000 units and employ about 3,000 workers.
