Toyota Technical Center USA Inc. reportedly will build its first U.S. vehicle crash-testing and safety research center at its upcoming engineering complex near Ann Arbor, MI.
Parent Toyota Motor Corp. is to announce the project Sept. 8 at a groundbreaking ceremony for the planned $150 million engineering facility, according to wire reports.
The Japanese auto maker in May completed the purchase of some 700 acres (283 ha) of land near Ann Arbor, where it will build the new tech center campus.
Construction of the first phase of development is slated to begin this fall, Toyota says. The planned 400,000-sq.-ft. (37,160-sq.-m) facility will house engineering design operations, adding 400 new jobs by 2010.
No cost estimates for the safety center have been announced, but wire reports note the facility likely will be constructed as a second phase of the engineering complex.
