Toyota launches a foundation to give women support and opportunities to build careers in manufacturing and to increase the number of female students who choose science and engineering disciplines.
Toyota and nine other Toyota Group companies are joining forces to set up the Toyota Female Engineer Development Foundation in Japan.
Toyota says in a statement it considers the greater participation of women in the field of technological development to be vital in the creation of ever-better cars and in achieving sustainable growth.
The foundation will draw upon the experiences of female tech workers to promote the rewards of such careers to high school students thinking about what university course to follow.
It also will provide continued career-development support to foster more science and engineering students and encourage more women to take active roles not only in the automotive industry but also in the wider manufacturing sector.
It’s a theme already pursued in the U.K., where the government recently highlighted Toyota’s promotion of science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies and jobs among young people, particularly women.
Toyota is joined in the foundation project by Toyota Industries, Aichi Steel, JTEKT, Toyota Auto Body, Aisin Seiki, Toyota Boshoku, Toyota Central R&D Labs, Toyoda Gosei and Toyota Housing.
