Several automotive suppliers will set up operations on the site of Toyota Motor Corp.'s new plant in Texas, the auto maker confirms in a joint announcement with Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Some 10 parts suppliers, as well as several service companies, will locate on Toyota Motor Mfg. Texas Inc.'s 2,000-acre (809-ha) San Antonio site. Many will be joint ventures with minority partners, some of which are local, Toyota says.
This marks the first time Toyota has located so many suppliers directly on its property.
Suppliers will invest an estimated $100 million for buildings and equipment for their on-site facilities. The projects will add 1,000 jobs to the 2,000 already being created by Toyota.
The Toyota plant, slated to build the Tundra fullsize pickup, will be operational in 2006, with a 150,000-unit annual capacity.
Parts producers are being offered the same discounted industrial rates on electricity and water as Toyota was offered, for a period of seven years, a San Antonio development official tells Ward's.
