Toyota Motor Corp. plans to produce a double cab version of its popular Tundra fullsize pickup, WAW has learned.

The new version, to be unveiled at January's North American International Auto Show, will hit the market in about a year as an '04 model.

The current Tundra comes as a Regular Cab or Access Cab — which sports a small back seat and rear-opening doors. A Double Cab will offer a full rear seat and rear doors.

Industry insiders initially speculated that the launch of the Tundra Double Cab would coincide with the introduction of the next-generation V-8. But it now appears the new truck will get the same engine that powers the current Tundra lineup, as well as the Sequoia fullsize SUV and a version of the new-for-'03 4Runner.

The vehicle's debut likely will be eclipsed by the launch of the Scion youth brand. The first two Scions will bow in Detroit as well.
