Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe dominate fullsize SUV sales.

DETROIT – With all the talk about EVs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, General Motors nonetheless has dialed in a host of midcycle refreshments to its venerable and highly profitable Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe for the 2025 model year.

There is nothing revolutionary here; Chevy doesn’t need to reinvent these wheels. While there are a few vehicles that compete with these two dreadnoughts, such as the Ford Expedition and Toyota Sequoia, Chevy has a fiercely loyal customer base and leading market share among both consumers and fleet buyers.

How dominant? Suburban and Tahoe combined for 156,707 sales in 2022, per Wards Intelligence, good enough for 40% of the fullsize SUV category. Add in the GMC Yukon built on the same platform and its 82,305 sales, and GM dwarfs Expedition’s 62,007 sales and Sequoia’s 5,313.

There is a new fascia and grille on each trim package from the base LS to the premium High Country. And because Suburban buyers like things big, you can now option 24-in. wheels on the LST and High Country.

The big brothers have three powertrains: the base engine is a 5.3L V-8, making 355 hp and 383 lb.-ft. (519 Nm) of torque; a 6.2L V-8 producing 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. (624 Nm); and the Duramax diesel. The Duramax 3.0L inline-6 turbodiesel is updated along the same lines as it was for the Silverado fullsize pickup for 2024. The enhancements make for 305 hp (up 28 hp) and 495 lb.-ft. (671 Nm) of torque, which is up 35 lb.-ft. (47 Nm).

Given the prices of these large SUVs, interiors need to be on par with luxury vehicles, and Chevy doesn’t disappoint. There are new dashboard designs featuring a 17.7-in. (45-cm) touchscreen infotainment screen, a big boost from the 10.2-in. (26-cm) screen in the outgoing model. There also is an 11-in. (28-cm) digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. There is a new steering wheel, and the shifter comes via a stalk on the column, replacing the button shifter on the outgoing model. The High Country gets leather and real wood, as well as a Jet Black and Mocha dash look.

There are camera-based features aplenty. Chevy’s Connected Cameras feature allows for automatic view and recording the view inside or outside of the vehicle, so that crash and security data can be recorded. The Interior Motion Detection system detects “micro-movements,” according to GM, meant to alert the driver that a child or pet, for example, might be in the vehicle. Indeed, the Suburban and Tahoe are so long and deep that such an occurrence is not out of the question, especially in the third-row seating. The car will text the driver or honk the horn if they leave the car with a beating heart still inside.

A large percentage of Suburban and Tahoe owners tow, and they get improvements: a new trailer navigation system that suggests the best routes based on the size of the trailer; a trailer-tire health monitor; and, because first-time boat trailering is on the upswing, the Chevy app works with the screen readout to walk you through steps for towing and even launching a boat into the water.

Air suspension is offered on the High Country and Z71 as well as the RST trim for the first time.

The Z71 trim has a chunkier front bumper with an improved approach angle for off-roading, skid plate and red tow hooks, as well as Goodyear all-terrain tires.

When it comes to highway cruising, the ’25 models can be equipped with Super Cruise as an option, though the hands-free feature won’t be available until shortly after the launch. There also is a proximity liftgate that allows the driver to stand for three seconds near the rear of the car with the key before it opens automatically.

The ’25 models begin production in late 2024 at the Arlington assembly plant in Texas. Pricing hasn't been released yet, but we don't expect much to change compared with the outgoing Tahoe and Suburban: The ’24 Tahoe LS base model starts at $58,195, while the High Country starts at $78,895. The ‘24 Suburban LS starts at $61,195 and the High Country trim begins at $81,895.
