AMG confirms it plans a new range of performance models based on Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming electric-powered EQS and EQE sedans and EQS and EQE SUVs – all of which sit on the company’s new dedicated EVA (electric vehicle architecture) platform.

Set to kick off with a powered-up version of the EQS due out later this year, the new battery-electric AMG models are set to receive either 43 or 53 model nomenclatures, depending on their power output, according to officials with the German automaker.

AMG says its initial range of electric models all will feature dual electric motors with AMG-specific software mapping and fully variable all-wheel drive as well as an upgraded chassis with standard air suspension, so-called i-Booster brakes, wheels ranging up to 22 ins. in diameter and a new wiring harness for the 400V battery.

Initial performance claims for the EQS 53 4Matic put its 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration at “well under 4.0 seconds.” The new upmarket electric sedan also is claimed to achieve a top speed limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Further differentiation from the standard EQS is set to come via AMG-specific exterior styling elements, AMG-themed digital instruments and an AMG sound package.
