Bentley is to become a 12-cyl.-engine exporter, now that owner Volkswagen has decided the ultra-luxury brand’s factory in Crewe, U.K., will become the center for all W12 engine production beginning next year.

It means Bentley, the world’s largest producer of 12-cyl. engines, will ship the powerplants outside the region for the first time in its history, creating about 100 jobs.

Bentley Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber says the sourcing shift is an important step for Bentley and the U.K. manufacturing sector.

“This W12 center of excellence is recognition of the longstanding engine manufacturing expertise we have that has resulted in performance improvements across the model ranges over recent years,” Schreiber says in a statement. “The production of this advanced engine and its future generations will bring new technologies and skills to Crewe.”

The W12 is an advanced 12-cyl. high-performance engine in a unique “W” configuration. It offers high levels of power and torque. Bentley expects to produce up to 9,000 engines per year.

Bentley headquarters in Crewe. 170 miles (274 km) northwest of London, is home to all of its operations, including design, R&D, engineering and production of the brand’s three model lines, the Continental, Flying Spur and Mulsanne.
