New Volkswagen Atlas Derivative Revealed in Chinese Registry Filing
The Chinese-market Teramont Pro hints at the future of the U.S.-made Atlas SUV.
A bold new Volkswagen SUV destined for the Chinese market may offer hints about the future of the 8-year-old U.S.-made Atlas.
Exposed in a filing by VW at the Chinese Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the modern-styled Teramont Pro is set to complement sales of the existing Teramont in China.
The Teramont is a Chinese-produced sibling to the Atlas built at VW's Chattanooga plant in Tennessee and sold in North America.
While VW has not yet confirmed the launch date for the new model in China, sources tell WardsAuto the Teramont Pro is expected to debut in November at the Guangzhou Auto Show, with sales slated to begin in early 2025.
The early reveal of the new internal-combustion-engine model suggests VW may be planning to split the Teramont/Atlas lineup into two distinct versions: a rugged, traditional design and a more modern, streamlined model that aligns with the company's ID-badged electric-vehicle lineup.
According to the MIIT filing, the dimensions of the Teramont Pro are as follows: a length of 203.1 ins. (5,159 mm), width of 78.4 ins. (1,991 mm), height of 70.4 ins. (1,788 mm) and a wheelbase of 117.3 ins. (2,979 mm).
Powering the new SUV is a 264-hp version of VW’s turbocharged 2.0L gasoline 4-cyl.
As with the current Teramont and Atlas, the Teramont Pro is based on VW’s MQB platform.
Volkswagen Teramont X sold as Atlas Cross Sport in North America.
