Scirocco Announcement Riles VW Workers

Volkswagen AG confirms it will build a new version of the sporty Scirocco sedan that was discontinued 14 years ago.

The car will be built at VW’s plant in Setubal, Portugal.

VW Scirocco sales ended in Germany in 1992.

The decision rankles German VW workers, coming on the heels of a company demand they extend their workweek to 35 hours from 28.8 hours – with no extra pay.

Volkswagen proposes the move as a cost-cutting measure. The auto maker is on a mission to achieve an annual pre-tax profit of €5.1 billion ($6.4 billion).

The Scirocco was introduced in the mid-1970s. Sales in the U.S. and Canada were discontinued in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Sales continued in Germany until 1992.
