Volkswagen U.K. opens a new front in the battle for service-department loyalty with the launch of a free lifetime brakes replacement service.

When a VW customer has the car’s brake pads or shoes replaced with VW parts at a participating retailer, the brakes and pads will be replaced for free for the lifetime of the car’s ownership. The deal covers the cost of both parts and labor.

The owner only has to show the invoice for the initial brake-pad or -shoe replacement.

The offer follows other backroom incentives, including fixed-price servicing for all VW cars aged 3-15 years and with engines up to and including 2.0L versions.

VW is second in U.K. new-car sales behind longtime leader Ford.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures show the German brand sold 4,123 units in the region in June to raise its first-half total to 21,878 units, less than half of Ford’s 59,239. VW also trails Ford in light-commercial-vehicle deliveries with 21,878 units in the first six months. The VW Golf is the UK’s fourth-best-selling model with 37,577 deliveries so far this year.
