Volkswagen releases the first image and video of its new utility vehicle the automaker plans to officially introduce Oct. 13.
A VW news release describes the vehicle as a compact SUV, slotting under the Tiguan. Wards Intelligence, however, classifies the Tiguan as a car-based CUV in its sales and inventory tables.
The new vehicle “is the second proof point of Volkswagen’s doubling-up SUV strategy following the launch of Atlas Cross Sport earlier this year,” the release says. Wards slots the Atlas Cross Sport in the Middle CUV segment, along with the Tiguan.
Other entries in Wards’ Small CUV segment include the Buick Encore, Toyota CH-R, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Subaru Crosstrek, Kia Sportage and Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer.
“We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” says Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception.”
