Volkswagen AG may produce its low-cost Up! minicar, also dubbed New Small Family, in Slovakia.

Lubomir Jahnatek, the minister of economy, says the German auto maker plans to invest about E300 million ($410 million) to produce two new models in the country.

“These cars will be (designed) for women, young people, students,” Jahnatek tells the local media. “Thanks to this investment project, more than 2,000 new jobs may be created.”

The Skoda Auto a.s. plant in Vrchlabi, Czech Republic, was considered to be the most likely production location for the Up!, but Volkswagen in November announced it would not produce the new minicar range there. It cited the risk of possible currency swings as the reason for the decision.

Union sources at Skoda and Volkswagen Slovakia a.s. confirm plans to produce the Up! in Slovakia.

VW Slovakia manufactures the VW Touareg and Audi Q7 cross/utility vehicles, Skoda Octavia cars and bodies for the Porsche Cayenne at its plant in Bratislava, the Slovak capital.
