Ford becomes one of the first U.K. employers to develop and offer a new government-backed degree apprentice program as an alternative to the traditional university route.

The new degree program provides theoretical and practical education in the digital and software field.

Ford over the past two years has offered its own higher apprenticeship programs, designed to attract a new generation of engineers and professionals to the automotive industry. It added a higher apprenticeship program in IT in September 2014, providing a path toward a bachelor’s degree in IT Management for Business, delivered with the University of Greenwich.

The latest program is being developed by Ford along with other leading technology employers and top universities. The government will subsidize some tuition costs and fees, while employers will provide undergraduates with an opportunity to earn and learn through a paid apprentice role with practical training.

Universities providing the IT degree apprenticeships include Loughborough, one of the original institutions selected by Ford to participate in the Blue Oval Scholarship program.

The program was established in 2011 with 100 student scholarships awarded to undergraduates at top universities across the U.K., encouraging a new generation of engineers, scientists and innovators. The program continues supporting a number of new undergraduates each year.

“Ford’s advanced and higher apprenticeship programs have produced some of the U.K.’s best engineers and innovators,” Ford Apprenticeship Manager Tessa Hougham says in a statement.
