U.K. Car Production Increases for 13th Straight Month
Engines and commercial vehicles builds failed to keep pace with car builds in July, slipping 1.9% and 1.3%, respectively.
U.K. passenger-car production jumped 22.2% in July to 119,882 units, for the 13th consecutive monthly increase.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says the latest result boosted year-to-date output to 875,998 units, a 15.1% improvement compared with like-2011.
“Car manufacturing continued to perform well,” SMMT CEO Paul Everitt says in a statement. “While uncertainty in Europe remains a challenge, the £6 billion ($9.4 billion) investment committed to the U.K. in the last two years delivers long-term growth opportunities.”
On the other side of the coin, commercial-vehicle production fell 1.3% in July to 9,004 units and a year-to-date total of 65,100, down 7.7%.
U.K. engine production slipped 1.9% in July to 128,886 units, narrowing the year’s gain 0.3% to 758,634 units.
The number of cars produced for export rose 15.3% in July to 94,490 units, pushing the 7-month total up 12.9% to 719,804.
Exports of CVs fell 13.5% to 4,642 units in July and, after seven months, overseas shipments were down 5.0% to 38,830.
Engine exports tumbled 17.6% for the month to 111,416 units and overseas shipments year-to-date climbed to 963,418, a 12.9% drop.
