New Hurricane Engine Powers Stretched Jeep Wagoneer L, Grand Wagoneer L
The Wagoneer L gets the standard version of Stellantis’ new Hurricane twin-turbo engine making 420 hp and 468 lb.-ft. of torque. The Grand Wagoneer L gets the high-output version, the Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510. As the name suggests, it produces 510 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque.
NEW YORK – Jeep’s long-wheelbase “L” version of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, coming as early 2023 models, are the first recipients of Stellantis’ clean-sheet turbocharged I-6 Hurricane engines destined to replace Hemi V-8s in the automaker’s large utilities and pickup trucks.
The Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are 226.7 ins. (5,758 mm) long, 12 ins. (305 mm) beyond the standard Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, Jeep says at the New York International Auto Show.
Most of the extra length goes into the cargo area behind the third row, says Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand, North America. The wheelbase is stretched 7 ins. (127 mm), which is reflected in additional passenger room, he says.
Height and width are unchanged for the ’23 Grand Wagoneer L; the ’23 Wagoneer L is 0.1 in. (2.5 mm) lower than the standard model.
Under the hood, the Wagoneer L gets the standard version of the new Hurricane twin-turbo engine (pictured, below). It produces 420 hp and 468 lb.-ft. (635 Nm) of torque. The Grand Wagoneer L gets the high-output version, the Hurricane Twin-Turbo 510. As the name suggests, it produces 510 hp and 500 lb.-ft. (678 Nm) of torque.
Jeep says the Hurricane engines are about 15% more fuel-efficient than the current V-8 engines, which is to say they get an estimated additional one or two miles per gallon.
For the standard-output engine, that’s 17 city/23 highway/19 combined mpg (13.8/10.2/12.4 L/ 100 km) with 2-wheel drive. For the high-output engine, it’s 14 city/19 highway/16 combined mpg (16.8/12.4/14.7 L/100 km, Jeep says.
In addition, Jeep also announces it has started taking customer orders for limited quantities of the high-output engine as an option on the ’22 Grand Wagoneer, Morrison says. The 2022 Wagoneer and Jeep Wagoneer debuted a year ago.
Morrison calls Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer the “premium extension of the Jeep brand.”
